From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the rugged coastlines of Sicily, Italy’s regions produce some of the world’s most renowned wines.
Here’s a breakdown of the wines that you will encounter while visiting each region in Italy.
Starting in the northwest, the coastal, highly-terraced region of Liguria is known for its crisp and refreshing white wine, Vermentino. This wine is made from the Vermentino grape and is known for its citrus and mineral aromas.
The quasi-Francophone Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta) produces the white wine Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle. Made from the Prié Blanc grape, this wine is known for its crisp acidity and minerality.
Piemonte is home to some of Italy’s most prized red wines. Barolo and Barbaresco are made from the Nebbiolo grape and are known for their full-bodied, tannic structure and complex aromas of roses, tar, and truffles. The Barbera grape is also widely grown in Piedmont and produces fruity, easy-drinking wines.
Lombardy produces some unique and interesting wines. Notable red wines include Valtellina Superiore and Franciacorta, a sparkling wine. Lugana DOC produces crisp white wines from Trebbiano di Lugana grape, while Moscato di Scanzo, a sweet red wine from the rare Moscato di Scanzo grape, is another unique wine produced in Lombardy.
In Trentino-Alto Adige, they produce Gewürztraminer, a white wine that’s more associated with Italy’s neighbor—Austria. Known for its exotic aromas of lychee, rose petals, and spice, this crisp wine goes great with both hearty mountain fare and spicy cuisine.
