Empoli is a football team from Tuscany and is part of a small group of Italian football clubs not based in a provincial capital city that has participated in Serie A.
Founded in August 1920, Empoli FC—known as “Gli Azzurri” (the “Blues”)—play their games at the intimate 16,284-seat Stadio Carlo Castellani in Empoli, Tuscany.
Empoli’s traditional rivalry is with Pisa SC, but the two rarely meet owing to the fact they are in different leagues. In Serie A, Empoli’s biggest rival is Fiorentina, the perennial heavyweight team of Tuscany. Their matches are known as a “Tuscan Derby.”
