Golf enthusiasts who also love Italy have a reason to smile this year when Rome hosts the 43rd Ryder Cup.
The 2023 Ryder Cup will take place from September 25 to October 1 and will feature the top US and European players, including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm.
Club Location and History
Hosting the highly-anticipated golf tournament is the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, located in the northeastern outskirts of the Eternal City—9.3 mi/15 km from the center of Rome in the direction of Tivoli. The club, which features two courses, including an 18-hole championship course, previously hosted the Italian Open in 1994 and 2021.
The golf club is named after Marco Simone (Marco di Simone), son of the Roman nobleman Simone Tebaldi who, in 1457, purchased the ancient estate in the Roman countryside and had several structures erected on the property including a castle (built atop 3rd-century Roman ruins) and a chapel (now a barn). Over the ensuing centuries, ownership of the estate passed through several Roman patrician families including the Borghese in the 17th century and the Brancaccio family in the 19th century.
For most of the 20th century, this rural area was mostly abandoned until Roman fashion designer Laura Biagiotti bought the property in the 1970s, restoring the castle and establishing a golf club on the grounds. “The redesign of Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, led by European Golf Design in cooperation with Tom Fazio II, began in August 2018 and was completed in March 2021,” according to the Ryder Cup website.

Where to Stay
The Marco Simone Golf & Country Club has two different hotel-and-golf packages available for those visiting Rome for the Ryder Cup—the Cavalieri Experience and the Savoy Experience—which pair three to four nights at a 5- or 4-star hotel with two rounds of golf at the course. These packages do not include Ryder Cup tickets—they must be purchased separately.
