Tina Modotti โ€“ silent film actor, pioneer photographer of the 20th century, political activist, and friend of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Pablo Neruda โ€“ was born in the northern Italian town of Udine on 16 August 1896.

Among Udinesi, Modotti is considered one of their most famous daughters. But I knew very little about this intriguing woman until recently when I stumbled upon an image of her birthplace.

Faรงade by Franco del Zotto Odorico

Located at Via Pracchiuso, 89, a short stroll northeast from the city center, the modest, three-story birthplace of Tina Modotti stands out thanks to its unusual, modern faรงade. Artist Franco del Zotto Odorico transformed the exterior of the building into a conversation piece.

The director of Caritas, the organization that operates the home as a night shelter for the homeless, commissioned Del Zotto in 2005 to decorate the faรงade, a project that took him nearly seven years from conceptualization to execution.

The result is a bas relief sgraffito-type engraving of words from Modotti and others within her circle. It recounts the period in Modottiโ€™s life when she was interrogated over her political activity with the Communists in Mexico. Each passage starts with the initials of the speaker: T.M. for Modotti; E.W. for Edward Weston, her long-time romantic partner; P. Neruda for, of course, Pablo Neruda. L. Zanier is Leonardo Zanier, a poet who wrote in the Friulian language and whose words feature at the top of the artwork.

Del Zotto etched various passages in Italian, English, Spanish, and Friulian, writing some words upside down or backward. This topsy-turvy approach is a reflection of Modottiโ€™s extraordinary, precarious life.

L. ZANIER. DA Nร” LA INT NAS LOSTรˆS / DA Nร” / NO โ€˜NDโ€™รˆ CE Fร‚ / MA LA INT / NAS LOSTรˆS / CUSSรŒ SI CRรˆS / COME I GJร’CUI / IN LIBERTร‚T / TRA LAS Cร’TULAS / DAS Mร‚RIS / E LAS RISCLAS / DAI PEZ / E QUANT / CHโ€™A SI CAPรŒSS / BISUGNA Lร‚.

Although this is a birthplace, the faรงade acts as an oversized tombstone to the legacy of Modotti; the script ends with her dates of birth and death. The artistโ€™s signature โ€“ written as F2 D0 Z1 O1 (i.e., Franco del Zotto Odorico, 2011) โ€“ is a nice touch.

Poetry from Pablo Neruda

Next to the home rests a small plaque with the last lines of โ€œTina Modotti Is Dead,โ€ a poem by Pablo Neruda that graces Modottiโ€™s tomb in Mexico City. Hereโ€™s the full text of Nerudaโ€™s epitaph in Italian and, below, the words on the plaque:

Nelle vecchie cucine della tua patria, nelle strade
polverose, qualcosa si mormora e passa,
qualcosa torna alla fiamma del tuo adorato popolo,
qualcosa si desta e canta.

Sono i tuoi, sorella: quelli che oggi pronunciano il tuo nome,
quelli che da tutte le parti, dallโ€™acqua, dalla terra,
col tuo nome altri nomi tacciamo e diciamo.
Perchรฉ non muore il fuoco
.

In the old hearths of your homeland, on the
dustyย streets, a word passes from mouth to mouth,
something rekindles the flame of your beloved people,
something wakes up and begins to sing.

They are yours, sister: those who today pronounce your name
we who from every place of the waters and the earth
with your name keep silent and pronounce other names.
Because the fire does not die.
